The Id, The Ego, and Eddie Kane Jr

What do Alvin & The ChipmunksThe Five Heartbeats, and David Ruffin and The Temptations have in common? Aside from the obvious; that they are music groups of transcendent talent whose influence on pop culture is still being felt decades after their initial heyday. They are also great examples of groups endangered by raging egos, but saved because they had a member or mentor who for whatever reason, be it love, greed, or their own ego concerns, did whatever it took to keep their respective groups together.

Dave Seville

Dave’s reasoning for managing The Chipmunks is because he wanted to make the dreams of his adopted children come true. His children became a successful act, but at a cost. Alvin’s ego became insatiable. His lust for the spotlight alienated his band mates/brothers who were actually more talented, but lacked charisma. Simon is a topnotch instrumentalist, while Theodore possesses a voice with a soulful quality with the potential to do great things. Instead of nipping  Alvin’s toxic self-glorification in the bud early on, Dave blinded by the success of the band allowed it to fester.  It continues to bubble, and represents a long-term threat to the happiness of his familiy.
Lesson: Relationships should have the principles and terms they are based on established and early on. Playing things by ear too much early on can cause things like balance to get away from the  participants.

Otis Williams of The Temptations

What can be said about Otis that has not already been said better by Leon? Otis was not one of “The Voices”, but he did/does exert an iron-fisted control over the legendary music outfit The Temptations. Over the years public opinion of old Otis has been all over the place, but one thing is clear. Otis never put ANYONE above the group. Friendships did not matter. Family concerns were given secondary priority to his true love being the “Big Daddy” of his brainchild. He continues to lead the group, but one has to wonder if the casualties were worth it.
Lesson: Do not allow yourself to be completely consumed in a relationship that other things in your life suffer. Complete devotion can be toxic. The carcasses of failed relationships that Otis left in the wake of his obsession with Tempts were enough to fill a graveyard, or a NBC miniseries. Do not make his mistake.

Donald “Duck” Matthews

Lesson: Don’t play “Shy Brother” with Leon. I repeat do not play “Shy Brother” with Leon. #ThatIsAll
